A prompt & a pearl: Week 9
A writing prompt and bit of writing advice/insight once a week in 2024
I was caught up with life and preparing for the coming of spring, my favorite season, and failed to share a prompt with you last week, so this week you get two.
The first is inspired by the Vernal Equinox. Happy spring!
The Prompt:
Spring is all about new beginnings and transformations. For many, the season symbolizes starting fresh and starting over.
After a long, cold winter, weeks of snow and ice trapping us indoors, and the blues that come with freezing temperatures (aka seasonal depression), spring reawakens us and the world around us—the birds are chirping (you may have already seen some with sticks in their beaks for the nests they’ve started building); the weather warms so we can open up our windows to let in fresh air; trees and bushes are budding, and bulbs are poking through the ground (hello crocuses, daffodils, snowdrops, tulips).
Write about how the seasonal changes mirror a transformation in your own life.
Or is there a transformation you are hoping to make, using the spring equinox, the astrological new year, as a starting point?
What seeds are you planting, metaphorically and perhaps literally (I’m talking to you my fellow gardeners)?
What are you letting go of?
The Pearl
Follow your obsessions and curiosities. There’s a reason you are fascinated by this thing. Dig to discover why.
Interested in the ocean? Research marine biology; study ocean currents and how they affect weather, the migration of wildlife, etc; learn the history of human worship of ocean deities.
My fascination with trees has opened up a world of new knowledge that is feeding by my writing and especially my metaphors. The research has also uncovered new curiosities: What are the world’s oldest trees? Have humans worshipped trees throughout history? What is the mythology of trees? What ancient stories include trees as central figures?
Happy writing, amores. I’ll see you soon.
